Why Your Gutters Overflow in Austin Rain (Even When Clean)
The gutters were cleaned in April. Then a May storm stalls over the Balcones Escarpment, drops two inches in forty minutes, and water pours over the back gutter onto the patio like the gutter isn't there. This is the most common call we get in Austin, and most of the time the gutter isn't clogged. It's overwhelmed.
Austin doesn't get much rain, it gets it all at once
Thirty-four inches a year is a modest total. The problem is that a big share of it falls in a handful of events. The National Weather Service's Austin/San Antonio office describes this stretch of the I-35 corridor as flash-flood alley: Gulf moisture pushed up over the escarpment, storms that build fast and don't move. Rates of two to three inches an hour are ordinary here; four is not unheard of.
A 2x3 downspout handles roughly 600 square feet of roof in a moderate rain. At Austin rates it's closer to 350. A two-story home in Circle C or Avery Ranch puts 900 to 1,200 square feet of roof onto the back run, usually with one 2x3 downspout at the end. The water arrives faster than the outlet can take it, the run fills, and it goes over the front lip. The gutter is doing what it was built for. It was just built for somewhere with gentler rain.
Four causes, and how to tell them apart from the ground
1. Not enough downspout. Overflow worst at the far end of a long run, while the downspout at the other end is gushing. Capacity. Fix: upsize the downspout to 3x4, which about doubles the flow, and add a second one on any run over 35 feet. $200–$350 per downspout.
2. The pitch has gone. Overflow in the middle of the run, and on a dry day a tide line of dirt or a puddle in the same spot. Spike hangers have backed out of fascia that has dried and split through twenty summers. Fix: re-hang on hidden hangers and reset the fall, about a quarter inch every ten feet. $150–$300 a run. Mosquitoes in July are the other tell; they need standing water for a week, and a properly pitched gutter is dry in a day.
3. The gutter is undersized for a valley. Overflow right below the point where two roof planes meet. A valley concentrates two roofs' worth of water on a couple of feet of gutter, and a 5-inch profile can't hold the surge. Fix: 6-inch on that run, or a splash guard at the valley if the rest is fine. $12–$15 a foot for the partial replacement.
4. The roof is metal. Water sheets off standing-seam metal fast and flat, and it clears a gutter hung the way it would be under shingles. From the ground it looks like overflow. Up close the gutter is half empty and the ground in front of it is soaked. Fix: rehang lower and further forward, usually with 6-inch. This is a Lakeway and Dripping Springs special, and it's a repair, not a roof job.

The one that isn't the gutter
A roof with no drip edge, or shingles cut short of the gutter, lets water run behind the gutter and down the fascia. It looks like overflow from the yard; up close the fascia is stained and the gutter is dry. That's a flashing detail, and any gutter crew should catch it from the ladder. It's common on 1970s homes in Northwest Hills and Allandale that have been reroofed twice without anyone adding the flashing.
Why it matters more here than the wet patio
West of MoPac the ground is a few inches of soil over limestone, and an overflowing gutter dumps a surge onto it that runs, erodes, and undermines the patio or the slab edge. East of I-35 it's Blackland clay, which swells when wet and shrinks in August, and a slab moves with it. Foundation work in Austin starts at several thousand dollars. What to do
If the gutters overflow, book a gutter repair inspection rather than a cleaning. We check pitch, downspout sizing, valleys and the roof edge from a ladder and tell you which of the four you've got.
